How do different amounts of alcohol affect drivers?

On Behalf of | Mar 17, 2023 | Car Accidents

On the road, all drivers must remain alert and sober. Tragically, some drivers get behind the wheel after drinking, and they have an especially high chance of causing an accident that could result in death or serious injuries. It is vital for drivers to recognize how alcohol impacts driving abilities. In fact, a small amount of alcohol can increase the likelihood of a crash.

Sometimes, drivers do not realize the extent to which alcohol affects their ability to operate a vehicle.

Even low amounts of alcohol can cause an accident

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration goes over the effects of alcohol and the various ways alcohol increases the odds of a traffic accident. When drivers have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of .02, they can struggle to divide their attention and do two things at once. At this point, visual functions can deteriorate, such as following a moving object with one’s eyes. When a driver’s BAC level reaches .05, they can struggle with steering, become less coordinated and respond to emergency situations slower.

Accident risks associated with higher BAC levels

When a driver’s BAC level reaches .08, they could have more difficulty processing information and their perception can become impaired. At this point, a driver could have difficulty controlling their vehicle’s speed and focusing on the road, and alcohol could affect their short-term memory. At .10, drivers can struggle to stay in their lane and apply their brakes when necessary. Drivers with a BAC level of .15 can have significant difficulty controlling their vehicle, focusing on driving and processing information.

When alcohol causes a driver to collide with someone on the road, victims must take a firm stand for their rights.
