Tips for preventing motorcycle accidents

On Behalf of | May 24, 2023 | Motorcycle Accidents

Did you know that 14% of motor vehicle accidents in 2020 involved motorcycles despite the fact that only 3% of all registered vehicles are motorcycles? In addition, these incidents have much higher fatality rates.

Therefore, in addition to learning motorcycle safety, these are a few tips to help you prevent accidents when you drive your motorcycle.

Obey traffic laws

Although you have the same rights to the road as other drivers, you also have to obey traffic laws as they do. Therefore, avoid speeding, obey traffic signals and do not drink and drive. It may surprise you to know that most motorcycle accidents involve speeding and alcohol, so avoid these circumstances. You should also leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles, especially during inclement weather.

Drive defensively

You are smaller and much harder to see when you ride a motorcycle. Therefore, it is more important to be alert and watchful of other drivers. Search for potholes and road hazards that could result in swerving vehicles, and watch vehicles closely when you are near railroad tracks. Beware of sand and rocks on the road. You should also watch intersections closely, especially if vehicles are in line to turn left in front of you.

Avoid riding in poor weather conditions

Rain, snow and wind can make your travel much more difficult. The roads may become slippery, visibility may become impaired and your ride may become uncomfortable. If you are unsure of the weather, pack rain gear so you stay dry. If you have to drive your motorcycle in the rain, learn how to do so safely. Avoid snow and icy weather altogether if you can.

If you have not done so already, consider taking a motorcycle safety course and learn other ways to stay safe on the road.
